Thoughts on retailers and packaging

Killing a little time via my feed reader this evening before the work week kicks in. On the list of feeds is Seth's blog. He posts a beef with retailers and packaging.

His point is that retailers can do better. You know what he driving at. Lots of retailers are wasting materials, killing the environment, etc. just to package their goods. However, what Seth is missing is that retailers - most of them at least - really don't give a rat's behind. They are in it to win it. Look at Apple's packaging. The iPod touch I recently bought came in a well designed package, but it wasn't the most eco-friendly piece. Lost of wasted paper and material for an item that's pretty thin.

Retailers won't change their bad packaging habits until they are told to do so by the government. It's that simple.

More on the new Apple Store...features

Got my hands on the Apple press release regarding the new Apple story on Boylston Street. Here are some of the details of the new building.

- It's the largest Apple store in the US
- Has two floors of Macs, iPhones and iPods for customers to "experience hands-on"
- Third and top floor is dedicated to "innovative services including the Genius Bar and personal training through Apple's popular One to One program."
- The store also "introduces Pro Labs to Boston, offering free, in-depth training on Apple's industry leading pro applications including Final Cut Pro"

This isn't on the release, but apparently the building has some sort of rain catch-basin that can recycle water. It also has a number of "green" features apparently. I got this second hand, BTW.

Regardless, pretty cool to have an Apple store a block down the street from the office. This will help me in my quest to rid my household of PC's and go strictly Mac.
